  1. Humans always over estimate the amount of protein they need (and often food in general). People have different protein needs. The average person doesn’t need as much as an elite athlete in a power sport. If building muscle and low body fat is a priority, it is important to note that there is no food source in the vegetable kingdom (not even TVP) that has the protein to carb ratio as tuna. For example, soybean protein to carb ratio per gram is about 50/50%. For tuna it is 100/0% It is virtually carb free and packed with protein. In other words, you would have to consume more than double the amount of calories to get the same amount of protein in soybeans as you would in tuna. Eat less, get more. Carbs put on fat, especially in older athletes. I’m faster now at 55 than when I was at 48 when a vegan . What changed was more animal protein, more strength training, BCAA and other amino supplements, resulted in lower body fat and more power than when I was a vegan. Sprinting is all about strength to weight ratio. If I were consuming all those carbs required to get the same protein as fish, I’d be heavier, not as fast. Fish and eggs are pretty much the only animal products I eat. Returned from the World Masters Championships in Lyon with 2 individual medals (400/200m). 2015 – ranked 3rd in the world in my age group in these events. Of course, endurance athletes can get away with a bigger carb load but endurance is more about lungs and vo2 max then it is about legs and power.
