20 trail miles, 2 unplanned

In further preparation for my first 50K (five days left!), I went for a long run this weekend with some friends, on the course where my second 50K — this one in January — will be run.  We planned on 18 miles, but got lost for a little bit and figured that added an extra two miles.  What's two more when you're doing 18?

Even with the where-the-hell-are-we excursion, the run was a good time.  And I tried out two new things:

  • Recovery Sock armwarmers.  It was pretty cold out when we started the run, so I was excited to try out the new armwarmers that Recovery Sock sent me to review.  And let me tell you, they did their job.  So well, in fact, that I had to take them off after a few miles because my arms were on fire.  It probably wasn't quite cold enough for armwarmers, but I did learn a great thing about armwarmers — you can take them off easily.  Can't do that with skin-tight UnderArmour shirt.  I have a feeling these things will get a lot of use this winter, so look for a full review once the temperatures drop more.
  • Limiting sugar and carbohydrate intake. Yes I know, you simply HAVE to fuel yourself with sugar when you're running or you will die.  But Stu Mittleman doesn't think so, and I'm open to any ideas someone who runs hundreds of miles in a few days might have.  I did drink about eight ounces of Vega Sport early in the run, but after that I stuck to almonds, and there was no bonk to speak of.

So the run was a success, made more so by some bean and rice soup I made from 1,000 Vegan Recipes, some Old Chub ale, and a nap.

Salad quartet

Speaking of 1,000 Vegan Recipes, I owe it to the author, Robin Robertson, to correct something I wrote last week.  Remember when the chili scorched my Dutch oven? (If I were more mature, that sentence wouldn't be funny to me, but alas, it is.)  Well, I blamed the recipe, since after all, I never do anything wrong.  But Robin got wind of it and emailed me to help figure out what went wrong, and it turns out I was supposed to stir it while it was simmering.  So really, it was my fault.  Sorry, Robin!

To make up for my error, I present you all with some food porn.  Four beautiful and delicious salads I made from 1,000 Vegan Recipeslast week.

Fennel, black olives, orange, and pine nuts:

Spinach, almonds, apple, and figs:

Carrots, cranberries, and walnuts:

Sweet potatoes, pear, celery, almonds:

All better than pig parts.

Awesome run! I think simple carbs are overrated for mid-run fuel. If anything, th have me wanting to quit the run for a restroom. Protein and fats work well for me

I agree about the low-sugar runs. I ran my 2nd marathon in Philadelphia on Nov 22nd, and most of my long runs were done as low sugar runs. I hadn't read Born to Run (which I just finished yesterday) – but got the idea from Greg McMillan's site. It basically involved NOT carbo-loading the previous night and not eating before the run and only consuming electrolytes during the run (with the little sugar they have). I did 3-4 runs between 16 – 20 miles this way. Except for one time when I had a headache later – I was fine. During the marathon I did not experience the wall/bonking and actually ran faster than my 10k PR for the last 7 miles. It may be due to other reasons but I feel that my post race condition was vastly improved because of the low-sugar runs.

Hi Gaurav, thanks for commenting. Greg McMillan was where I first learned about low-sugar running too. But I tried to go off of sugar cold-turkey, and had a really bad run because of it. I kind of gave up on the idea until I came across Stu Mittleman, and now I realize that gradually reducing sugar is the way to do it. I'm not at all surprised that you didn't hit the wall and felt a lot better after the race, that's completely consistent with what I've read. It's great to hear that it works though!

I've had so many other bloggers recommend your site to me. It's great. Gorgeous salads!

My husband runs a lot and is not big on eating a lot of sugary carbs to refuel. He makes his own sports drink with Gu and Clif electrolyte powder, but he only drinks this during his longer marathon training runs and during the race itself. As far as food goes, he gets most of his carbs from veggies, and he eats some oats. No pasta, rice, or bread.

Thanks Heather! It's nice to hear that other people are into the less-sugar idea. Your husband should try the natural homemade gel and sports drink from Brendan Brazier, in the Recipe Index of my blog. I like them much better than the commercial stuff.

I'm glad to have stumbled upon your website/blog! I too keep a blog that emphasizes healthy eating for athletes (tending towards, but not exclusively vegetarian/vegan). I also have an appreciation for you being able to keep up with all of this during your dissertation. Grad school is a tough time to find time for yourself, and I'm glad you're able to find that balance (I sure never found it…). I'll add you to my list and hope you get the opportunity to visit my blog too!
