Stuck in a rut
As for the personal stuff that only belongs here, not on Running Shorts, I’ve been in a little bit of a funk recently. Not depressed or anything like that, but just not quite myself. Kind of unmotivated, with school, with cooking, with day-to-day activities.
The biggest sign that something’s not quite right, other than the elapsed time since my last haircut, is that I’ve been sleeping in more. I don’t have to be into school until mid-morning at the earliest, but I always get up with Erin at six to make a smoothie for us. I do this primarily so that she doesn’t think I’m a lazy sack of s, sawing logs in bed while she’s off helping kids (she’s a pediatric occupational therapist) to support our lavish townhouse lifestyle.
The trouble is, I find myself going back to sleep more and more after she leaves. Sometimes for two hours, sometimes for four. Before you say “must be nice,” realize that it’s not nice. And it’s not me. When things are right, I have so many things I want to do that I can’t wait to get out of bed in the morning. But recently, I can’t wait to get back in.
Believe it or not, I think this is related to qualifying for Boston about a month ago. So much of my focus was on that goal, and now that I’ve achieved it, I can’t help feeling a little bit directionless. I have so much to look forward to and work toward with the baby, my Ph.D., and hopefully a 50-mile run. But none of those things is urgent enough to occupy my mind the way the upcoming marathon and the chance to achieve the goal I’d been chasing for so long did.
The one thing that’s giving me more energy than it ever has is running. Since I’ve started trail running with this group of ultra-runners (ironically called RUT — RASAC Ultra Team), running has been more enjoyable than ever for me. When I’m not running, getting back out on the trail is all I can think about. For the first time in my life, it’s not about the training process, it’s about the running. And for the first time, I feel worthy of the label “runner.”
So I have a plan to get myself out of this rut. I’m going to run every day in November, usually early in the morning. I’m going to try to average seven miles per day, or about 50 per week. This might not seem like a big deal to you, but for me it is. I’ve never run more than five days a week for any period of time, and never consistently run this many miles. More significantly, I’ve never wanted to run this much before.
Don’t worry; I’ll be smart about it. If I see that I can’t handle it, I’ll stop. Being injured and not able to run at all would be the worst thing right now. But I think that done carefully, this just might be the jolt that I need.

Tra, well I haven’t done any power cleans yet… but I’m definitely starting to think about an offseason (and even on-season) strength training plan. And with lots of full-body exercises like cleans. I’ll keep you posted!
Your rut makes sense! I have a friend who was planning her wedding for over a year and once it was over she didn’t know what to do with herself. She was so wrapped up in the planning and prep that, once it was over, she had a really hard time with it. It’s just like you and the marathon.
Good luck getting yourself out of it! Giving yourself a new goal is exactly what you need!

OOh I love Amazing Grass giveaways! I’ve been wanting to try this stuff for ages…it’s all over EVERY food blog and I don’t think I’ve heard a bad thing about it (with the exception of the cost of it).
I get in a rut every now and again as well. Usually when I finish or accomplish something (like you) that I have really been looking forward to. This sounds like a fun challenge/goal and I wish you the best! Hope you’re having a good Monday

Oooh! What a great giveaway. I’ve wanted to buy this for a few months now, but I just can’t bring myself to spend the money on it. I hope I win!
today is the beginning of Operation:Lose Fat for me, and i’ll probably end up picking up some of the superfood stuff VERY soon. gotta get through the remnants of the Clif stuff in my desk first, though.
related: Luna bars = win for taste. it’s hard to resist eating one for breakfast, some days.
Grass
Your rut makes sense. It’s easy for that to happen once you’ve accomplished something that you were focused on for so long.
Good Luck with your November goal!
50 miles a week!! That is a whole lot of mile.. I thought 30 was a lot.. damn!
I’ve always wanted to try this Amazing Grass stuff! Good luck with your goal!
i want the chocolate flavor 🙂 🙂 YUMMM! thanks for the amazing giveaway! and good luck with your november goal!!!
I’d love to try it! 😉

oh my goodness! I have been wanting to try this stuff forEVER.
and I might just try it anyway with the coupon code, so thanks for that. Any word on how long it will last?
-
Alicia, they didn’t tell me anything about how long the coupon code would last. My guess is “until further notice.”
This stuff sounds great! I’d love to try it out!
Good luck with your rut. I’ve been in one myself since my marathon 3 weeks ago…and I didn’t even qualify for Boston 😀
I would love to try amazing grass!
50 miles is a lot! I am in the final week of my last long run before the Philly marathon and I’m doing about 50 and it’s SO hard, but I know will be very rewarding.
Please sign me up for the contest! I’ve been wanting to try that stuff 🙂
Thanks!

I can relate to your unmotivation and being in a rut, that happens to me sometimes, nothing earth shattering but little things where I am like, hey, that’s not like me, that’s not what I want!! Its good to see it for what it is, just needing some direction and umph! I think everyone has those down times when we are recovering from a goal achieved or finding where to go next!! Congrats on the “runner” label!! I have my official “half” necklace on now, it says “for the love of the run. ” It is LOVE isn’t it. 🙂 Oh, great giveaway too!
my my, this sounds like the makings of another 30 DAY CHALLENGE…
hooray for super simple giveaways 🙂

I totally understand feeling directionless. I need short-term, mid-term and long-term goals to keep me motivated. With a long-term, dream goal of completing an ironman in 2011, I’ve needed to break down my steps into short-term wins, or I would never be able to stick with it. Good luck!
I would also love to try Amazing Grass!
The rut is not surprising at all…and I think your assessment of it is right on the mark. It makes total sense to have a little bit of a let down when all of your time and energy is focused on one project. I think your 30-day challenge for Nov. is a good one:)
I love the idea of a 30-day challenge. Good luck on surpassing your next goal and many thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway. I’ve been wanting to try AG for a while. P.S. Love the Super Fan shirt in your Halloween Post. The back of mine reads, “Eagles on the Warpath.” 🙂
Thank you for the great giveaway! I keep hearing good things about Amazing Grass! I would like to try them.
Good luck with your 50 miles per week for 30 days challenge!
Good luck with the running goal! If it’s what you and your body truly want I have complete faith you’ll be able to pull it off.
Awesome giveaway, too!
i’ve been in a similar rut since the marathon too. i think having a goal keeps me motivated, and when i don’t have one, then sometimes i just kind of drift around. i think you need to cut yourself some slack, take the time to get back on track and realize that it is only temporary. the baby, trail race and PhD will be here before you know it 🙂
.-= Holly´s last blog ..This Busy Bee =-.
Don’t get too down on yourself for needing a lot of extra sleep for a little while…it’s perfectly normal. You went through an extreme physical and emotional experience and your body is still trying to recover completely. I usually go through a week or three of the same thing at least twice a year – since I get up at the same time every day, my body just tells me to go to bed earlier in the evening (sometimes as early as 7 or 8pm.) I don’t fight it.
Good luck with the running every day – a spate of that is a good motivation and is quite healthy when used in moderation. If you really want a nice quick challenge, you could see how long you make it in the “1 More Mile Challenge” which I was going to do this year (I didn’t discover it until mid/late November last year) but decided not to given that I’m still recovering from the broken foot and just building a base back right now.
Here’s the site:
http://1milechallenge.blogspot.com/
You basically run 1 mile on November 1st, 2 on the 2nd, 3 miles on the 3rd etc all the way up through the end of the month.

Blaine, actually sounds like a lot of fun, and at the very least an interesting test. I went to the site, and they’ve moved it to January! So maybe I’ll do it then, depends on where I am with ultra training. Probably it’s better for when I don’t have any race on the horizon though.
i like the way you contest
I would love to have some of the Amazing Grass Chocolate Superfood! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!
I often feel like that after a race when my next race is a little too far away to start training and getting excited for. I’m sure you’ll get out of your rut soon.
Good luck!
I love the chocolate Amazing Meal! Good luck with the new challenge!
50 MPW is a huge deal in my book and I totally know what you mean by being in a rut. I just wrote about my rut yesterday and am trying to work my way out of it. Who knows maybe I’ll win this Amazing Grass and that will be the kick in the pants I need!
xoxo

I’ve tried the chocolate Amazing Grass and I liked it. I would love to win!
good luck getting motivated! maybe your body just needed some down time after all the training you did to qualify for boston and now your mind is telling your body to get back in to it! its not a bad idea to take breaks from things every once and a while.
i’d love to try the green superfood! thanks for the giveaway.
Enter for the grass! I hope the running gets you out of your funk!
Besides the running everyday, you might try training for a shorter, faster race. You’re probably still in great shape after all the marathon long runs and track sessions, so why not see how fast you can run a 5k? It’s amazing how great it feels to be done after 3 miles when you’re used to running 20+. 🙂
-
Helen, thanks for the suggestion about the 5k. I think you’re right; I could probably run my best 5k now. But they just hurt so much! I swear those 20 minutes are worse than 3 hours of a marathon!
I’ve always wanted to try AG since seeing it on EVERY blog I read, but it’s just too darn expensive. Especially because I don’t want to run the risk of not liking it!
I’m hitting that same point. I’m seriously considering an indoor tri and learning to swim more efficiently so I can do a tri… I need something because right now I’m doing it for fun, but I’m just not pushing myself to be better I’m ok with being where I’m at.
I’m glad you’re getting so much out of trail running – that’s awesome! I need to do something like what you’re doing, rut-wise..just make myself get the heck up and do it. I keep wanting to try Amazing Grass products but the price always scares me off!

MMMM I really want to try the chocolate! Great Giveaway!
OOh, totally want amazing grass! Thanks for having this. I can’t believe it is called Amazing Grass!! Hahaha 🙂
I know what you mean by bounding out of bed when everything is right and sleeping A LOT when everything is not. I tend to hang out on the couch during my free time, getting nothing done when things are “off” and I can’t quite put my finger on it. Good for you for using running to get out of that rut!
I LOVE Amazing Grass! I’ve really been wanting to try their wheatgrass powder!
This is your mother. Don’t worry about the lack of interest in things for awhile. It’s natural to reach a huge long-awaited goal and then feel a bit of lack-luster disorientation. It’s your inner energy getting aligned with your new self and trying to figure out what else will be important. Do things that seem fun now and it will unfold. The Boston Qualifying was too important to you to have something new eclipse it so soon. That would be shallow. Btw, if I win the grass do a re-draw- it’s just not my cup of tea right now.
I oversleep when I’m in a rut too, that’s my first tell-tale sign. I hope you’re feeling better soon, I know how frustrating it can be!
Great giveaway!
I don’t think your “rut” is anything out of the ordinary. My husband has run 10 marathons and I can’t remember one that he wasn’t in some sort of a “funk” for a while afterwards. It seems the fall ones were harder on him, including increased sleeping, not much appetite, and a little extra ADD thrown in there. This too shall pass. Good luck!
And pick me! Pick me!
I’ve really been wanting to get into the Amazing Grass thing, because I tried it once and liked it… here’s hoping I win 😉
I love amazing grass and if I wasn’t a poor almost, sorta recent college graduate, I’d buy it more often. Thanks!
I have tried this only once and loved it! I would love to win some!

Thanks for making Amazing Grass available for giveaway. I’ve read about it on various blogs but have been reticent to try.
Happy Running!
I love love love this blog! I’m a long-time reader but I don’t really comment. Just wanted to let you know you’re extremely inspiring though–I think it’s normal to feel a lack of motivation after accomplishing such a huge personal goal. I think this just makes you human! 🙂 Thanks for the fun giveaway–I love that stuff but my wallet does not!
-
Thanks Andrea, great to hear from you! And thank you for calling me “inspiring.” I just do normal stuff and blog about it!
Hello! I have been there with the rut post marathon as well, but trail running will get you out of that in no time, it is exhilarating! Also I WOULD LOOOOVE the AMAZING grass, i have been vying for that stuff for a long time, but it is a bit costly for a graduate student, thanks!
love the bars– would like to try the powder!
Love the blog! Love greens! Hate ruts! Here’s hoping I win some greens and your 7 mile a day jolting plan works…CHEERS!
I feel you on this post! I’ve been struggling with life for the past few months…the “real world” is much different than the “academic world,” and I feel kind of lost. Given that I work the evening shift (3-11pm!), I don’t technically have anything to wake up for in the morning, so I can sleep as late as I wanted…and I often sleep until 10:30! Not good. This especially happened when I was injured and took some time off of running. I frequently have to reorient myself and remind myself that there are things to be done that I ENJOY. I hope your plan works for you and you get your pizzaz back! (I’m sure the upcoming baby will also help with the “getting out of bed” part too…)
Thanks for the giveaway!

In regards to the rest of your post… it’s actually very common to feel a little “lost” or “let down” after a big event or a big accomplishment. When you spend days, weeks, and months focusing on one event, once that event comes and goes, your mind (and heart) immediately say “Now what?” This is actually really common for brides planning weddings. They put so much effort into the wedding, and after they get back from the honeymoon, they are a little lost with what to do with their time. This happened to me (I got married in May). It just took a while for me to get back in the groove of life, instead of focusing all of my energy in ONE area. My husband also felt it a bit– but not quite to the degree that I did. We spent our evenings watching TV and saying that we were bored. But eventually, things got back to normal.
I think your running plan sounds perfect! Let us know if things get back to normal for you! Good luck!
I’ve been wanting to try this stuff!! Thanks for the contest! Good luck with your challenge!
I’d love to try that powder in a smoothie!
Ruts come and go… I find them a normal part of the “running cycle.” I usually notice running “ruts” toward the beginning of summer…
I’ve never had the powder but read a lot about it on blogs! I’d love to try it.
Whether it’s withdrawal after completing a major goal, or the seasonal change of weather/daylight, or your immune system fighting off a small strain of the flu, or even just pure lack of motivation – there are a lot of reasons your body might be begging for sleep. Hang in there and make sure you listen to your body.
And, most importantly, have fun on all those morning runs!
Thanks for talking about this…I think sometimes in the blogger world, it seems like everything is sunshine and roses all the time, but that’s not always the case. I’m sure you’ll get out of your rut/funk soon, and I know that talking about it will help. Thanks for hosting this giveaway!
I think it is normal to become stuck in a rut when something you have been waiting/working for is over. You’ll snap out of it before you know it!
come on lucky number 73!
Sounds like post-partum blues 🙂 Hopefully the change in routine will pull you out of it.
I usually get a rut at the end of summer … when I’m tired of hot weather running. It fades as soon as fall rolls in 🙂
It’s the same as post-Christmas let down. The lethargy will pass. Having your November goal will certainly help. Good luck!
I’m sorry about your rut! I have been in one for quite a while and yesterday I made the decision to change my lifestyle and start running again. You’ll make it through! Congratulations on Boston!
I feel you on the rut thing. I just ran my first marathon October 4th and ever since it’s been hard to be motivated to workout. I don’t think the colder weather helps either.
I’d LOVE to win some Amazing Grass! Love that stuff!

i love love love chocolate amazing grass. It is AMAZING
thank you for hosting the giveaway!
I can understand the post-race slump. It’s pretty common. It’s like the runners’ version of post-partum depression in a way!
Anyway, I’d love to win the giveaway (I never win these things)!

Hey Matt! Great blog. I’m glad you like running now because I’m still trying to work toward that. Good to see it’s possible…
i started running about 2 years ago and got much more serious about it about year ago. my first big race was the cherry blossom 10 miler – i had a blast, but in the following weeks (which lead into 3 months) i just felt kinda “meh”. i fo ‘sho had the “post-race blues” and was feeling in a bit of a rut (actually – it was a pretty darn big rut!). i did just what you’re doing & made another goal for myself (i’m training for my first half marathon, and i might go on after that & try my first marathon soon, too). i think your goal to run every day in november is awesome! i’d love to do something like it. maybe after my half marathon i’ll give it a go to keep me happyfaced & motivated.
i’m going to check out your post on running shorts. i actually just finished reading “born to run” 2 nights ago – and i’d love to get into some barefoot running, too! i think it would be so awesome! i’ve been reading your blog for a few months now – sorry i don’t comment too much. thought i’d post & leave a comment for the amazing grass contest. i love their chocolate drink powder (when i got the natural food store i pick up a few packets of the chocolate flavored mix) and drink it mixed in with a little almond mix in the mornings after i run – it’s so yum!
I’ve been dying to try this stuff! Thanks for the giveaway!
Hi Matt! I’m a long time reader, but first time commenter. 10 days ago I ran my first marathon and loved the experience, but I was disappointed with my time (barely under 4 hours).I thought I was ready to run sub 3:40, but got myself a nasty case of runner’s knee 2 weeks before the race and was in pain the entire time..I still am. The worst part..no running. I miss it sooo much! I know you were hurt before and had your share of pain and frustration, but don’t worry, I won’t tell you to appreciate running and never take any run for granted..it just doesn’t work that way. But I will tell you that waking up for 5:40am spin class and getting into a cold water to swim some laps late in the evening really sucks 🙂
-
Zuzka, I know what you mean about the cold pool and I feel for you about the injury. Being injured sucks. So do cold pools. Running in the cold is rough, but water is so much worse, isn’t it?
Love Amazing Grass. I just finished my last container. Thanks for the 15% off, just in time.
Based on the reviews I’ve seen, I’ve always wanted to try Amazing Grass. But it’s a bit pricey to buy for a product that I’ve not even sampled before.

I would love to try Amazing Grass without having to buy a huge tub, since that’s all I seem to find around me! I definitely understand that post event workout rut – sometimes a break is a good thing though!
It’s the weather!! change in seasons, especially to winter, always get me down. You’ll get through it, I’m sure!
It sucks when you get in a rut, it always seems to happen to me when it starts to get colder out. Kudos to you for taking action to get yourself out of it, it can be really difficult at times, especially when there’s a warm cozy bed calling your name.

I’ve somehow lost my motivation. I ran today for the first time in about three weeks. I think it’s the change in season and time. Thanks for the great suggestions and I love reading your blog!
Hi Matt
Here are a few ideas:
I have found that when I’ve been so focused on a race and times etc, I can get tired of training – especially speed sessions etc and it can be really nice to leave my watch at home and just run! Head up, taking in the scenery, not focusing on how far you’re going / how fast you’re going – just enjoying being out. I’d recommend going somewhere with great views of nature, having some good tunes on and enjoying it. 🙂
In terms of feeling low, maybe you need more mini goals between now and the ultra marathon. Things that excite you and make you want to get up. i.e. running every day 🙂 You could add some more things in too for a bit more balance.
Perhaps you could benefit from adjusting the way you approach goals. We can become really outcome focused, rather than enjoying the journey (excuse the cliche). Remember that you’re complete now and that achieving goals is about having fun! 🙂
Let go of conditions on your happiness. (It’s easy to get sucked into the pattern in our culture that says that we have to be, do or have certain things in order to be happy.) Let go of any pressure on yourself to be, do or have anything, and do things that make you feel good – and do them from a place where you are focusing on why you want to do them, not because you feel like you should.
From personal experience, if I have a day (or two… 😉 where I don’t want to get up, it’s generally because there are things I don’t want to do. perhaps making sales calls etc. The best way to get over them is to start them and then realise that they are much easier than you imagined.
Other times it can be a result of forgetting what your purpose is. i.e. mine is to help people and make the world a better place by being a source of positive energy in the world.
I remember once having one of those days when I was feeling low for no apparent reason, and someone at a check-out was really friendly (even more surprising as I was in London and I find people to be a bit more insular in big cities). Anyway, it completely changed my mood and I walked down the street grinning from ear to ear, thinking ‘what a nice person’. I certainly passed that good feeling on too, so by smiling and being friendly to me, that person helped a lot more people.
I love the feeling that my actions can have a positive effect on so many others. Certainly helps me get up in the morning.
Keep the blog going, always enjoy it
Ed
Congratulations again on qualifying! It’s definitely a goal of mine and your story is very inspiring! And a trail running group sounds awesome, and definitely something I wish we had where I’m from!
50 miles per week IS A BIG DEAL!
hey, how are those power cleans comin along? don’t forget you’re going to up the strength training too!
